Resumen
XSpace Bio is an educational platform designed to revolutionize the learning process in biomedical instrumentation for engineering students. This custom electronic board enables the acquisition of three-lead ECG signals and photoplethysmography (PPG), allowing the measurement of physiological parameters such as Pulse Transit Time (PTT) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). By integrating signal acquisition and processing, XSpace Bio bridges theoretical knowledge with practical applications and fosters critical thinking and innovation. Unlike traditional courses, which focus on device operation and applications, XSpace Bio helps students understand the full development process of biomedical devices, from research to implementation, preparing them to engage with industry challenges. Tested with 93 students at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, the platform demonstrated high satisfaction in ease of use (4.25), integration (4.18), and learning utility (4.15). Academic performance also improved, with average grades rising from 15.18 to 16.32. Notable outcomes include the projects AU-RICHECK (CNIB 2024), SUNQUI (EMBC 2025), Pulpi (2nd place at Runayay and CNIB2025), and Backpack ECG (finalist at Emprende Cayetano), showcasing the platform’s role in enabling real-world biomedical innovation. In conclusion, XSpace Bio provides essential skills in biomedical engineering and sets a new standard in biomedical education. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
