Xenarthrans

Moreno G.R. · Zoo Animal and Wildlife Immobilization and Anesthesia (2025) · DOI: 10.1002/9781119539278.ch29

Resumen

The species of Xenarthrans superorder have very varied morphological and physiological characteristics, and include species as small as the pygmy anteater and the lesser fairy armadillo with weights that do not exceed 400 g, and others as large as the giant armadillo and the giant anteater that easily exceed 50 kg in adulthood. Determining an accurate body weight will allow more precise dosing of anesthetic drugs. This may reduce the risks associated with anesthesia and may improve postanesthetic recovery. The method of physical restraint of Xenarthra varies depending on the species. Venous access is a huge challenge when it comes to xenarthrans. Endotracheal intubation in xenarthrans is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges in the anesthesia of these animals. Pharmacological immobilization of xenarthrans is undoubtedly one of the most complicated areas of wildlife anesthesia for many reasons. Local anesthetic techniques such as infiltrative and neural blocks should be considered for intraoperative and postoperative pain control.
