Working Method for Conceptual Database Modeling using Crow's Foot Notation and ER-Assistant Software to improve the process of database design in Database Management Courses at a University of Trujillo, Peru

Resumen

It is known that a conceptual model is the representation of a real context; for this reason, it can be said that the conceptual data model is an intermediary between the objects of reality and the database model that is implemented in a computer. Several existing notations are known that provide us with the guidelines to design a conceptual model such as: Chen's Notation, UML Notation, Barker's Notation, among others. Therefore, our objective is to propose a working method for conceptual data modeling considering the crow's foot notation and the ER-Assistant case tool. It can be asserted that the combination of both elements allows the automation of the creation of a conceptual database model. For the development of the work method, in the first instance the course projects that the students presented were analyzed. Then, with the information collected, the students elaborated their conceptual model, documented it and in parallel the progress of the students was measured. Finally, good results were obtained in most of the students, placing them at an "In Process" level. Which means the assimilation of theoretical and practical concepts in the development of a conceptual data model.
