Well Drilling Optimization: A Comprehensive Approach in Geology, Geomechanics, Technical and Economics

Sánchez W.; Cortegana O. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2025.1.1.2102

Resumen

This research proposes a comprehensive methodology for the optimization of well drilling, addressing geological, geomechanical, technical and economic aspects. Using data from the Sheshea 126-17-1X well, located in the Ucayali basin, electrical logs from the LAS archives were examined to interpret the lithology of the subsurface formations. The study focuses on the calculation of the mechanical specific energy (MSE) and its correlation with the mechanical properties of the rock, such as unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and confined compressive strength (CCS), complemented by the analysis of operational parameters such as weight on bit (WOB), revolutions per minute (RPM) and torque. Likewise, seismic velocities (Vp and Vs) and elastic properties (Young's Modulus and Poisson's ratio) were calculated to determine the stiffness and deformability of the formations. According to these analyses, adequate WOB ranges were determined to obtain an optimum rate of penetration (ROP), reaching increases in ROP of up to 8.41%, drilling time reduction of up to a maximum of 7.76%, and a maximum economic saving of 8.33%, compared to the actual values observed. It is concluded that the integration of a geomechanical and operational analysis makes it possible to identify and correct inefficiencies associated with excess energy during drilling, optimizing the process and reducing operating costs.
