Web-based programming challenge platform using generative AI to improve programming skills in undergraduate engineering students

Yarleque A.; Ordaz C.; Aliaga E. · ICACIT 2025 - Proceedings: 11th International Symposium on Accreditation of Engineering and Computing Education (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/icacit66767.2025.11369540

Resumen

- Generative artificial intelligence has emerged as a valuable tool in several fields, including education. This project proposes the development of a web-based platform for programming challenges that integrates this technology with gamification elements to strengthen programming skills among university students. The platform provides performance feedback and automatically adjusts the difficulty of programming challenges through fine-tuning, a feature that sets our proposal apart from existing alternatives. To evaluate its effectiveness, an experiment was conducted with 60 first-year Systems Engineering students. A comparison of post-intervention results with baseline measurements revealed that the platform increased student motivation relative to initial levels. Furthermore, students demonstrated significant progress in their programming skills, with an average improvement of 27.3% in final scores. These findings support the hypothesis that the platform not only enhances programming proficiency but also fosters academic motivation, thereby contributing to the development of key technical competencies demanded by today’s labor market.
