Resumen
This study shows the development and pilot evaluation of a Virtual Reality (VR) based platform designed to assist elderly adults with musculoskeletal injuries in upper limb physiotherapy, recognizing that aging populations are particularly prone to such conditions and therefore require innovative solutions that strengthen rehabilitation efforts while maintaining motivation and adherence. The system integrates motion technology with immersive virtual environments so that rehabilitation sessions can be personalized and progressively adapted to each patient, while its development required the careful selection of suitable hardware and software, the design of interactive exercises and the implementation of a user friendly interface that prioritizes accessibility for elderly users. Therefore to validate these design decisions, a pilot study was carried out with five participants at Casa del Adulto Mayor 2 in Surquillo, Lima, Peru, where the platform was tested in real rehabilitation sessions and demonstrated great outcomes such as higher motivation, stronger adherence to therapy, and perceived improvements in mobility, all of which are critical dimensions for a successful recovery. The preliminary results suggest that the immersive VR experience has the potential to overcome barriers commonly associated with conventional physiotherapy, including limited engagement, while also offering a cost effective alternative particularly valuable in contexts with restricted compare to other services, and together these findings highlight a promising path for elderly care in Latin America and opening new opportunities in the field of rehabilitation.
