Resumen
The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) is transforming the landscape of rehabilitation, offering novel, patient-centered approaches that enhance recovery outcomes. This chapter explores how AI-augmented VR environments are redefining traditional rehabilitation paradigms by enabling immersive, adaptive, and data-driven interventions for patients recovering from neurological, musculoskeletal, and cognitive impairments. We examine the role of AI in personalizing VR therapy sessions through real-time biomechanical and behavioural feedback, dynamic difficulty adjustments, and predictive analytics for patient progress monitoring. Through case studies spanning stroke rehabilitation, orthopaedic recovery, and neurocognitive therapy, we illustrate how these intelligent systems foster patient engagement, improve motor and cognitive functions, and provide clinicians with actionable insights. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the technical architecture, challenges, and ethical considerations of integrating AI and VR in healthcare, including data privacy, accessibility, and clinician training. By presenting emerging trends and future directions, we argue that AI-driven VR rehabilitation is not merely an adjunct to conventional therapy but a paradigm shift towards more interactive, precise, and effective patient care.
