Resumen
The PREVI Lima project provided a concrete setting for the Metabolist ideas promoted by Japanese architects such as Fumihiko Maki during the 1960s. However, the pragmatism associated with the region’s housing deficit has framed interpretations of the competition around notions of self-help, social participation, incremental housing, and prefabrication, overshadowing the Metabolist contribution within academic discourse. This essay examines how the concepts developed by Maki’s group articulated an alternative urban imaginary for mass housing, whose occupation reveals its capacity to adapt to cultural and spatial processes that remain relevant today.
