Utility of clinical simulation to achieve competences in nursing students in times of COVID-19

Valladolid D.A.; Moreno T.M.E. · Revista Cubana de Enfermeria (2020)

Resumen

Introduction: Clinical simulation takes center stage because universities now focus on competency-based learning; therefore, it is essential to evaluate this pedagogical tool to verify its usefulness in the university academic environment in times of pandemic where students cannot carry out clinical practices due to social isolation. Objective: To identify the usefulness of clinical simulation to achieve competencies in nursing students during COVID-19. Methods: Systematic review of the literature between December 2019 and January 2020 included the planning, design and management, analysis, elaboration and formalization phases, the strategic search was carried out in the Science Direct, EBSCO, SciELO and PubMed search engines.; by combining the Boolean operators OR and AND. Full texts in Spanish were considered between 2009 and 2019. After the exhaustive selection was made, 37 articles were obtained that met the planned objectives to achieve a comprehensive and inclusive understanding, which were submitted to the PRISMA methodology. Conclusions: The clinical simulation achieves an experiential learning and the development of critical thinking in nursing students through the reflection of the practice and this guarantee the achievement of competences, which can be used in this situation caused by the COVID-19 due to the impossibility of doing clinical practices, since it offers an alternative to train a qualified professional.
