Types and functions of metaphors in university teaching discourse; [Types et fonctions des métaphores dans le discours de l’enseignement universitaire]; [Tipos e funções das metáforas no discurso docente universitário]

Calambrogio L. · Lengua y Sociedad (2025) · DOI: 10.15381/lengsoc.v24i1.25907

Resumen

The purpose is to identify conceptual metaphors in the teaching discourse and classify them in relation to the typology proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980); furthermore, the aim is to detect the image schemes described by Evans and Green (2006) and determine their function in the discourse, according to Goatly’s (1997) proposal. Methodologically, the study is descriptive in scope and qualitative in approach. Discourse recording was carried out according to the parameters of variation proposed by Calsamiglia and Tuson (2001). The corpus is made up of one hundred and four metaphorical expressions that were collected from a Semiotics course given at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo (UNPRG) in May 2022. A form was used as a research instrument to collect each metaphorical expression. Among the results, it was found that metaphors that correspond to the classification of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) appear in the teaching discourse. Within the ontological type, the high occurrence of the conceptual metaphor ideas are entities stands out. In addition, the functions explanation-mo-delling, call to action, increase memorisation and reconceptualisation were identified. Of these, the explanation-modelling function was the most frequent, suggesting that they are mainly used to facilitate the understanding of content. © Los autores.
