Resumen

This study offers a historiographical and quantitative analysis of linguistics theses presented at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos - UNMSM (San Marcos University) between 1940 and 2024. In this way, historical and recent scientific production is documented to identify the types of theses published, the main thematic areas, and the languages studied. Based on reflections developed during the Linguistics PhD program (2024), a total of 263 theses from the undergraduate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels were reviewed, using a database built from documentary and institutional sources. The analysis was carried out using Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) techniques implemented in Python. The results reveal a predominance of studies in lexicography, lexicology, phonetics, and phonology, as well as a thematic evolution toward new perspectives such as sociolinguistics and cognitive semantics in recent decades. Regarding the languages studied, Spanish and Quechua lead the production, followed by Ashaninka and other Amazonian languages. The study also highlights key moments in the institutionalization of linguistics at San Marcos University, from the founding of the Higher Institute of Linguistics and Philology in 1936, to the consolidation of the current Professional School of Linguistics within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the creation of graduate programs. This work not only documents the academic trajectory of the discipline, but also allows for reflection on its trends, gaps, and projections within the Peruvian university context. © Los autores.
