Therapeutic Effects of Probiotics in Childhood Autism: Beyond the Gut-Brain Axis

Ttito A.P.G.; Healey S.B.; Vela-Ruiz J.M. · Revista del Hospital Psiquiatrico de la Habana (2024)

Resumen

Introduction: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are conditions that affect social interaction and communication, with a global prevalence of 0.76%. Recent studies link the intestinal microbiota with the development of ASD. An imbalance in this may contribute to ASD, suggesting that modulation with probiotics may be a promising strategy to improve the associated symptoms. Objective: Carry out a literature review about the effects of probiotics on the symptoms of autism in children, analyzing their possible clinical implications, and proposing directions for future research. Methods: Articles in English and Spanish, published between 2019 and 2024 in PubMed and Google Scholar, were used. A search strategy was conducted with MeSH terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria. 7 articles out of 213 initial results met the analysis criteria. Results: The studies reviewed show that probiotics can improve gastrointestinal symptoms, reduce behavioral symptoms, promote social interaction and reduce repetitive behaviors. Conclusion: Probiotic supplementation is a promising complementary therapy for the management of ASD, with positive effects on gastrointestinal, behavioral and sensory symptoms. However, the heterogeneity of the reviewed studies highlights the need for additional research to confirm its long-term efficacy and safety. © (2024), (Ministerio de Salud Publica).
