The use of laser in the reality of periodontics and implantology

Resumen

Introduction: Laser technology has been used in periodontics and implantology for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Objective: To critically analyze the use of lasers in periodontal and peri-implant surgery, and to expose new guidelines for this technology in daily practice. Methods: A literature review was conducted on the use of lasers in periodontics and implantology; its current status worldwide, recent scientific evidence, and future prospects were evaluated. The search was carried out in the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, using the English terms: "laser," "dental," "periodontology," and "implantology." Articles published in English during the last five years were included. Results: The reviewed literature describes different applications of laser in dentistry. A division is made of the four lasers that perform most adequately in dentistry. Conclusions: Lasers are an innovative therapeutic alternative in periodontics and implantology.
