Ruiz-Atoche Y.J.; Valdiviezo-Pirgo A.S.; Lujan-Vera P.E.; Zerga-Romaní J.J. · Clio. Revista de Historia, Ciencias Humanas y Pensamiento Critico. (2026) · DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20605336

Resumen

Tourism potential is understood as a region’s capacity to develop as a tourist destination based on an assessment of its resources and conditions for providing services. Within this framework, the general objective of this study was to understand the tourism potential of the Santo Domingo–Morropón district in 2024. The research was phenomenological, with a qualitative focus, aimed at understanding the experiences and perceptions of key stakeholders regarding tourism development. Data collection included interviews with key stakeholders; the sample consisted of seventeen participants. The results show that the district possesses a significant diversity of natural and cultural resources; however, their utilization is limited by deficiencies in municipal tourism management, a lack of strategic planning, and limited budget allocation. Additionally, weaknesses were identified in the tourism infrastructure and in the coordination between public and private actors, which restricts the development of a competitive tourism offering. It is concluded that the district has a moderate level of tourism potential, characterized by favorable conditions that have not yet been consolidated. In this regard, strengthening the tourism sector requires a comprehensive, multisectoral approach that promotes institutional management, community participation, and ensures the sustainable use of tourism resources.
