Resumen
In this study, the spectral horse is analyzed in the poems «El caballo» (1916) by José María Eguren and «Bajorrelieve» (1926) by Mario Chabes in order to demonstrate the versatility of the fantastic in poetry and to refute its exclusion from the genre by theorists such as Todorov. Through a hermeneutic-comparative analysis, it is shown that in Eguren the horse alludes to a historical trauma (the War of the Pacific) through a Symbolist aesthetic. In Chabes, the spectral host constitutes a materialist and decolonial critique, in which Andean dogs annihilate the conquerors. It is concluded that the lyrical fantastic is an adaptable aesthetic system, capable of articulating both intimate mourning and political reivindication. In this way, the generic restrictions that Todorov attributed to poetry are refuted. © (2026), (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona). All rights reserved.
