Resumen
This article analyzes the thesis El porvenir de las razas en el Perú (1897/2025) by Clemente Palma, using the theoretical framework of styles of thought proposed by Giovanni Bottiroli. The development of the work explains that the Italian rhetorician’s approach is inscribed within a cognitive conception of reality. The article presents the three styles of thought put forward in the critic’s work, Retorica. L’intelligenza figurale nell’arte e nella filosofia: distinctive, confusive, and separative. The study clarifies each of these styles in order to distinguish the essential features that compose them; however, it emphasizes the last style, since it responds to the hierarchical construction that Clemente Palma establishes in his thesis. Consequently, based on this differentiation, the essential particularities of the separative style are highlighted, with emphasis on the separative synecdoche. In addition, the work draws on previous proposals in order to situate the exegesis within an analytical framework. These investigations make it possible to understand the context in which the approach of El porvenir de las razas en el Perú is situated, as well as the internal logic that it proposes. From this perspective, the aim is to demonstrate how the aforementioned work by Clemente Palma is articulated around a logocentrism that legitimizes a proposal of partial eugenics.
