Resumen

This work deals with the major plumbers in colonial Lima, a profession of great importance for the proper functioning of the city as it enabled the inhabitants to have access to drinkable water. Their work consisted of making, extending and maintaining the city’s water mains, and when they could not cope with so much work, the town council hired other auxiliary plumbers. The problem that this profession presents is that it was one of few members, above all, passed down from father to son, becoming an exclusive and closed occupation, of great skill and ability, where the secrecy of knowledge prevailed despite the constant demands of the town council for updating the maps of the Lima’s encañado which they were reluctant to comply with. © Universidad de Jaén (España).
