The postponement of social rights and its relationship to inequality in Latin America

Barboza A.V. · Estudios de Deusto (2025) · DOI: 10.18543/ed.3458

Resumen

The connection between the postponement of social rights and inequality is an issue of great relevance for Latin America, due to the effect it has on people’s standard of living, especially for those who are part of disadvantaged groups. Therefore, this article analyzes this relationship and explores the evolution of the constitutional protection of these rights, underlining the egalitarian feature with which they emerged and the objections that have arisen to their protection. It then examines the realization of these rights in Latin American realities and concludes by identifying that the existence of effective deprivations of social rights is part of a process of historical accumulation of disadvantages that generate and reproduce inequality in the region. © (2025), (University of Deusto).
