Bravo P.W. · CABI Agriculture and Bioscience (2025) · DOI: 10.1079/ab.2025.0070

Resumen

The postpartum period occurs between parturition and the subsequent pregnancy and is brief in female llamas and alpacas. This review delves into reports on anatomy, histology, and physiology, offering practical implications for animal science and veterinary medicine. Additionally, it examines the nutritional impact on postpartum conditions and incorporates new data gathered by the author that emphasize the evaluation of the body condition of females during this period. The review concludes with an analysis of female fertility during the postpartum phase. Overall, many aspects of the postpartum period are discussed, approaching this time in the lives of female llamas and alpacas from a scientific perspective, with the hope that the clinical and practical insights will be beneficial to practitioners and individuals interested in South American camelids. © The Author 2025.
