The Outbreak of the War of the Pacific in El Comercio (La Paz, Bolivia, 1879)

Soto Lara J.J.; Villar Aguirre B.M. · America Latina Hoy (2023) · DOI: 10.14201/alh.30909

Resumen

The discourse of El Comercio during the Pacific War is analyzed. The underlying the-oretical premise suggests that it played a prominent role as a nationalist political actor, influencing how the representation of the events was constructed. To test this hypothesis, a sample was configured with news published between January and May 1879. The results indicate that El Comercio promoted a deeply anti-Chilean imaginary, discrediting both the political class and the Chilean people.
