Resumen
The mass media are an essential place for political actors, especially in presidential campaigns. In Peru, the press is still powerful due to the country’s weak political institutions. Most academic research in Peru have focused on the positive, negative or neutral press coverage of candidates to reach conclusions about the role of the media. However, the role of the newspaper as a political actor has hardly been explored. This study presents the results of a content analysis of 194 articles and 33 editorials published in El Comercio newspaper during the second electoral round of election in 2016 about Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. We worked on the following question: How are the strategic frames published by El Comercio on the presidential candidates of the Peruvian elections of 2016? We are interested in comparing El Comercio’s frames about both candidates to detect how the newspaper transcends its principal function of reporting and behaves as a political actor.
