Resumen
This article explores the conservation and management of the buildings within the monumental zone of the seaside town of Mejia in Arequipa, Peru. The aim was to analyse the performance of the management components on cultural heritage of the local government during the period 2019–2022. A qualitative methodology with an exploratory scope was employed, including field observation, focus groups, and coded data analysis. The study highlights that Mejia has historically maintained spaces dedicated to leisure and social distinction, key elements of the reproduction of its social identity. It also found that the monumental zone faces social, environmental, climatic, and political challenges in its conservation and urban development. The study concludes that municipal management components have had minimal impact on the protection of the monumental zone due to the lack of adequate urban planning tools. Finally, the research produced a conservation and management diagnosis of its heritage buildings.
