Resumen
Difficulties in solving additive problems are a problem that affects children in Peru, and has a negative impact on the development of mathematical skills and apathy towards this science. The objective of this study was to determine if the yupana, or Peruvian abacus, as a didactic resource, is effective for solving additive problems without and with exchange in second grade students of an intercultural school in Peru. The study is quasi-experimental with an experimental and control group. It was carried out in a population of 108 children from 7 to 8 years of age, with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 30 and 29 children, respectively. The data was obtained with the Problem Solving Test with a validity greater than 37 points (favorable). According to the results, the ability to solve additive problems without and with exchange, in the experimental group, improved by 8.67 points. It is concluded that the modified yupana, as a didactic resource, is effective for solving addition and subtraction problems without and with exchange of up to three figures.
