THE HUMAN BEING REDUCED: THE STONE AS AN ETHICAL MODEL AND WORLD ORGANIZER IN LA PIEDRA ALADA (2005)

López T.E.R. · Metafora (2023) · DOI: 10.36286/mrlad.v3i6.148

Resumen

Death linked to elements of family and nature is a very recurrent theme in the poetic work of José Watanabe (1945-2007). The stone, certainly, as an element of nature, has been the subject of few but valuable studies on the different characteristics and meanings it acquires in Watanabe’s poems; however, it is striking the scarce number of investigations focused on this aspect, especially with a collection of poems such as La piedra alada (2005), where it is the central element. Thus, death and the elements of the family are also present in this collection of poems, so that Watanabe builds a complex network of correspondences around the stone. Therefore, this article proposes to examine, based on Stefano Arduini’s General Textual Rhetoric and the argumentative techniques of Chaïm Perelman’s Rhetoric of Argumentation, the condition of the human being in front of the stone to demonstrate that death and the meaning of the stone as an ethical model or world organizer are mechanisms to reduce the image of the human being.
