Resumen
Background and Aims: Herbaria collections have significant scientific, historical, and cultural value. They constitute an important source of data for understanding diversity and, above all, are valuable resources for taxonomic research and for assessing the conservation status of endangered species. The objective of this work is to present the collection and the importance of the Herbarium Areqvipense (HUSA) for the knowledge of the flora of southern Peru. Methods: During the period from 2013 to 2023, specimen collection, herbarium collection, identification, curation, and incorporation into the HUSA database were carried out, following HUSA’s herbarium collection and management techniques. Key results: The herbarium HUSA currently houses a collection of 22,053 records, representing 3354 species, 1523 genera, and 271 families. The greatest diversity corresponds to Magnoliophyta (20,386 records), followed by Pinophyta (793 records), Pteridophyta (781 records), Basidiomycetes (64 records), and Bryophyta (29 records). 98.21% of the material (21,657 records) comes from Peruvian territory, while 1.79% (396 records) corresponds to foreign sources. The collection includes specimens collected between 1905 and 2023, spanning a period of 119 years. Botanist Fátima Cáceres de Baldárrago stands out as the main collector, with 5749 records. HUSA houses 250 endemic taxa. In addition, 16 type specimens are deposited in this herbarium. Conclusions: The Herbarium Areqvipense (HUSA) is a scientific institution registered in the Index Herbariorum and recognized by the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) as the official repository of biological material in Peru. The HUSA plays an important role in safeguarding a botanical collection that preserves floristic knowledge of the south of this country. Its main mission is to conserve, document, and study botanical diversity.
