Resumen
Research and reading habits in higher education are important factors that future professionals must acquire; however, the results of these indicators vary according to country and context, influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The objective of this article was to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) to obtain scientific evidence from studies on reading habits and attitudes toward research among university students internationally, providing a comprehensive and exhaustive overview. Related articles were extracted solely from the Scopus database, formulating questions and keywords according to the PIOC (Population, Intervention, Outcome, Context) components. Of the 386 studies reviewed, following the PRISMA methodology, 28 articles were selected for review. Bibliometric analysis was also used to better understand the studies conducted. The review revealed that reading habits are strongly conditioned by early childhood, where the family context plays an important role. Likewise, the availability of programs, tools, access to thematic books, laboratories, or well-implemented libraries encourages university students to research and thus increases reading habits. Digital tools played a major role during the pandemic and are currently very important due to their ease of access to classes, readings, and research. However, there is concern about their inappropriate use, as they are often not used with reliable sources. This information is important for all those responsible for education policies in public and private universities who seek to guarantee inclusive and equitable education with access to quality higher education, thus responding to the fourth sustainable development goal of the United Nations. © (2025), (UNIVERSIDADE FEEVALE).
