Resumen
The Austrian diplomatic documentation shows how the establishment of the Portuguese court in Brazil meant its opening to free international trade and the emergence of a war market in the River Plate region. The conflicts between Madrid and Lisbon over the Banda Oriental led to the closure of Portuguese ports to Spain, which made it impossible for the latter to send expeditions to the Pacific coast, thus influencing the independence war.
