The fictions of liberalism: history and individualism in Mario Vargas Llosa’s narrative (1974-1981)

Garcés J.A.V. · America sin Nombre (2022) · DOI: 10.14198/amesn.18092

Resumen

The purpose of this article is to identify the political and ideological motivations that reoriented Mario Vargas Llosa, in the mid-1970s, toward liberalism. Our final objective is to get closer to the liberal thought that the author of La ciudad y los perros projects on his novels in the context of the years between 1974 and 1981. We study the way in which a liberal political knowledge assumed, in Vargas LLosa, certain elections at the formal and thematic level. We refer to the use of rewriting for political purposes in La guerra del fin del mundo and the resources of the metafictional and self-referential in novels such as La tía Julia y el escribidor. We use as a theoretical framework the sources of classical liberalism that develops individualistic atomism and relativism as a principle in the analysis of reality.
