The Documentation Unit at the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)

Cruz R.E.B.S. · Transitional Justice Archives: Documenting Human Rights Violations in Latin America (2025) · DOI: 10.4324/9781003609322-7

Resumen

The Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), established in 2001, was tasked with reconstructing the recent history of human rights violations during the internal armed conflict from 1980 to 2000. The TRC created a Documentation Unit (UD), responsible for searching, collecting, and processing bibliographic and documentary information from public and private institutions. The chapter discusses how this information was utilised in various areas of the TRC’s work, specifically focused on investigating the causes and consequences of the internal armed conflict in Peru during that period. Subsequently, the archive of the TRC was transferred to the Ombudsman’s Office, which took on the responsibility of preserving this collection and making it accessible to civil society and institutions. This institution supports the implementation of the recommendations of the TRC’s Final Report. To this day, the documentary collection produced by the TRC has been essential in administering justice and reparations and strengthening historical and social memory in our country.
