Resumen
Paisajes peruanos (1955), a travel book by Peruvian writer José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma (1885-1944), makes extensive use of the chronicles of the Indies. An attempt is made to establish a taxonomy based on Susana Reisz’s narratological theory, which draws on Aristotle’s Poetics and Rhetoric and engages with the ideas of European and American theorists from the latter third of the 20th century. This approach identifies different uses of the chronicles: factual and argumentative, quasi-fictional and fictional. The first is exemplified by the narrative of the battle of Jaquijaguana (1548), the second by that of the battle of Chupas (1542), and the third by the «Inca legend» —actually a modernist short story— Palla Huarcuna.
