Resumen
This study analyzes the socioeconomic condition of the territory, heritage vulnerability, and territorial governance linked to the El Algodonal (Viza) rock art archaeological site, located in northern Peru. The aim is to formulate courses of action that articulate the conservation of archaeological heritage with local economic development and social inclusion in rural contexts. A mixed methodological design of a descriptive and analytical nature was applied, combining documentary analysis, territorial characterization, and participatory fieldwork. Official statistical sources, in situ observations, and community perceptions were integrated using validated instruments (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.891). The results show the persistence of structural poverty, critical deficits in basic infrastructure, low public investment, and weak territorial governance, factors that together intensify the vulnerability of archaeological heritage and restrict local capacities for its conservation and enhancement. It is concluded that conservation must be assumed as a strategic axis of sustainable territorial development, prioritizing participatory governance, planned public investment, and the strengthening of community capacities, in line with international frameworks for cultural protection. © ARQUEOLOGÍA IBEROAMERICANA.
