Temporal and spatial distribution of dengue in Tingo María, Huánuco, Peru

Resumen

Dengue is a viral disease caused by an arbovirus of the Flavivirus genus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The simultaneous circulation of the four viral serotypes (DENV1, 2, 3 and 4) has been occurring since 2010 in Peru and determines a scenario of hyperendemicity of the disease in the country. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological situation of dengue in Tingo María, Huánuco in the last two years. This is a descriptive observational study that used data from dengue notifications from the National Surveillance System from March 2021 to August 2022, available in the Epidemiological Bulletins and Ministry of Health publications. A cluster analysis examining and describing patterns of introduction, including the speed and direction of dengue spread, was conducted. We address this knowledge gap, providing meaningful insights into the unique and shared patterns of spatiotemporal disease risk in Tingo María. The incidence and morbidity rates point to the need to improve the organization of the response to dengue epidemics. This study provides information on the epidemiology of dengue in the country and can be used in the formulation of public health policies to reduce the impacts of viral transmission.
