Resumen
Sludge generated in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) represents a valuable source of renewable energy. Through the application of technology, it can be converted into biogas and biohydrogen, contributing to energy sustainability and the circular economy. This systematic literature review sought to analyze the various technologies used for the production of biogas and biohydrogen from sludge in WWTPs. To this end, the PICO method was used to identify the questions for analysis, working with Scopus and Web of Science. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were also established, and the PRISMA methodology was used to systematize the screening, selecting a total of 64 articles. The results obtained showed that, for the production of biogas and biohydrogen, processes such as anaerobic digestion and co-digestion stand out, which use technologies to improve their efficiency. In addition, common barriers that hinder their large-scale implementation were identified, such as energy consumption, lack of adequate infrastructure, and operational complexity. The findings suggest that these technologies have high potential, although they require technical improvements and favorable conditions to be applied sustainably in real-world contexts.
