Resumen
This study assessed the techno-economic feasibility of Battery Energy Storage Systems for energy arbitrage at strategic nodes of the National Interconnected Electric System of Peru under the ancillary-services framework associated with Law No. 32249. Historical 15-min marginal-cost records from 90 nodes were analyzed for 2022-2025. A quantitative screening procedure combining marginal-cost variability, positive-spread persistence, low-price charging availability, and electrical representativeness identified 18 nodes for detailed evaluation. A 10 MW/40 MWh BESS was modeled to charge during the four lowest-cost hours and discharge during the four highest-cost hours, considering 90% round-trip efficiency, one equivalent full cycle per day, and 10%-90% state-of-charge limits. Zorritos 220 presented the strongest arbitrage performance, with an average efficiency-adjusted daily spread of 86.55 S/MWh, positive spreads on 81.72% of valid days, and annualized revenue of 0.973 million S/year. All valid days were retained, and mandatory cycling on negative-spread days reduced annual revenue by 1.42%-3.86% across the selected nodes. Nevertheless, arbitrage-only operation produced an NPV of -25.40 million S at Zorritos 220. Break-even operation requires approximately 2.983 million S/year from ancillary services, indicating that economic feasibility depends on sufficient complementary revenue or combined improvements in investment cost and market income.
