TAHITI AND COLONIAL PERU: THE EFFORTS OF VICEROY AMAT (1772-1776)
Sotelo J.O. · Intus-Legere Historia (2023)
Resumen
In the 1760s the British and French carried out an exploratory effort in the Pacific, causing concern in Spain because if they settled on any of its islands they could be a threat to their American possessions. To counter this potential threat, between 1772 and 1775 three expeditions left Callao for Tahiti with the intention of preparing the establishment of a colony. In the course of these expeditions, some natives were taken to Peru, while two friars, a soldier and a sailor, remained on the island for a year. However, both the international situation and economic constraints led to the eventual abandonment of the colonizing project.
