Systematic Review on Water Pollution and Wastewater Treatment in the Asian Textile Industry

León-Velarde C.G.; Matos Samar A.M.; Oscco Platero A.F.; Puma Pérez C.I.; Salazar Deza C.A.; Fernández-Flores S.M. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2026) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2026.1.1.583

Resumen

The textile industry is one of the world's most polluting, especially in Asia, where wastewater discharge contributes to water pollution. Therefore, various methods for treating textile wastewater exist. The objective of this review is to identify these different wastewater treatment methods and analyze which are the most effective and environmentally friendly in removing pollutants to minimize water pollution. The PICO method was used with keywords to formulate the research question, followed by a Boolean search using Boolean operators (AND, OR) to link English terms in the Scopus database, resulting in 1479 articles. The PRISMA method was then used to select 46 articles that met inclusion and exclusion criteria, such as open access research and publication year. The results include an evaluation of different authors and their publications, along with a graphical analysis generated by VOSviewer showing the most prominent keywords. This study also reveals that certain conventional methods, such as coagulation, are effective. However, advanced methods for treating textile wastewater, such as electrocoagulation and the use of nanotechnology in the design of these new methods, are promising, although they are more expensive and have limitations.
