Resumen
This paper presents the design and conceptual development of SYNC, a prototype device intended to support asthma medication management in school environments. Grounded in human-centered design and the SEIPS model, SYNC addresses the common challenges faced by school caregivers and parents in coordinating timely and safe administration of inhaled medication. The project followed an exploratory design approach informed by informal conversations with healthcare professionals and a targeted literature review. These inputs shaped a user-focused proposal that integrated ergonomic principles, auditory alerts, a confirmation mechanism, and asynchronous notifications for parents. Two physical prototypes were developed using 3D modeling and FDM printing, evolving from a clinical aesthetic to a more child-friendly design. While not yet validated through formal user testing, SYNC illustrates how design can bridge communication and safety gaps in pediatric care systems. The device provides a cost-effective and scalable solution for enhancing medication adherence and caregiver coordination in educational settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
