Sustainable structural concrete optimization with locust bean pod ash and silica fume: impact on mechanical properties

Melendrez Llontop M.S.; Fernández Salazar V.A.; Cubas Armas M.R.; Suclupe Sandoval R.E. · Innovative Infrastructure Solutions (2025) · DOI: 10.1007/s41062-025-02043-5

Resumen

This research evaluates the influence of carob pod ash as a supplementary cementitious material combined with 5% silica fume on the mechanical properties of concrete. Mixes with 4%, 6%, 8%, 8%, 10% with LBPA + SF, and a control mix were designed to evaluate the mechanical performance. Compression, indirect tensile, flexural and modulus of elasticity tests were performed at 7, 14 and 28 days. The results showed significant improvements in mechanical properties with the incorporation of LBPA and SF, with the 8% LBPA mixture being the optimum in compression, tensile and modulus, and the 10% LBPA mixture in flexure. The statistical analysis also confirmed significant differences, highlighting the potential of LBPA as an alternative cement substitute. Durability studies are recommended to confirm its long-term viability. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
