Sustainable Stabilization of Clay Soils: Application of Cacao Shells in Road Subgrades

Flores E.W.C.; Silva V.M.R.; Ayala R.M.D. · Congreso Internacional de Innovacion y Tendencias en Ingenieria, CONIITI (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/coniiti68560.2025.11366164

Resumen

The study evaluates the feasibility of using cocoa husks as a stabilizing material for clay soils in the city of Tingo María, Perú. This approach seeks to offer a sustainable and economical solution to improve the mechanical properties of soil used in road subgrades. Physical and mechanical tests such as granulometry, Atterberg limits, and modified Proctor compaction were carried out, determining the optimal dosage of cocoa shells. The results showed a significant improvement in the carrying capacity and stability of the soil treated with 15% cocoa shells, which confirms its technical and economic viability in road projects.
