Sustainable Management Techniques in the Manufacturing Sector Supply Chain: Impacts on Operational Efficiency from a Systematic Review (2020-2025)

Erick Churata Ramirez E.; Ernesto Pacheco Casimiro M.; Coaquira Torres E. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2026) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2026.1.1.636

Resumen

Growing environmental and regulatory pressure has led manufacturing companies to incorporate sustainability approaches into their supply chain management, with the aim of reducing environmental impacts and improving their operational performance. In this context, the present systematic review of the literature aimed to identify and analyze the main sustainable management techniques applied in the manufacturing sector's supply chain, as well as to evaluate the reported effects on operational efficiency. To this end, a systematic review was developed following the PRISMA guidelines, using the Scopus database as the main source of scientific information. The initial search identified 429 articles published between 2020 and 2025; subsequently, by applying previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 26 studies were selected for qualitative analysis. The review was structured using the PIOC approach, considering the issues addressed, the interventions applied, the results obtained, and the implementation context. Analysis of the selected studies showed that the sustainable management techniques most commonly used in the manufacturing sector are circular economy, green supplier management, reverse logistics, clean technologies, and life cycle analysis. The application of these techniques was associated with significant improvements in efficiency indicators, such as reduced energy consumption, decreased carbon dioxide emissions, optimized use of materials, increased recyclability, and reduced operating and logistics costs. In addition, various types of sustainable supply chains were identified, adapted to the specific characteristics and needs of manufacturing companies. In conclusion, the evidence analyzed suggests that the integration of sustainable management techniques into the supply chain contributes positively to the operational efficiency of the manufacturing sector. This review provides a structured synthesis of approaches and results that can serve as support for business decision-making and as a basis for future research aimed at furthering the implementation of these techniques, especially in developing economies.
