SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TO IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Esteban E.A.; Flores N.A.; Barriga M.F.; Rada L.C. · IET Conference Proceedings (2025) · DOI: 10.1049/icp.2025.1120

Resumen

This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) analyzes the use of sustainable construction materials to improve environmental impact, focusingon their effectiveness, applications, andcontributions to construction projects. The methodology combines the PICO and PRISMA frameworks: PICO guided the formulation of four researchquestionsto identify relevant studies, while PRISMA ensured a rigorous inclusion-exclusion process, resulting in 38 key articles. Sustainable materials are essential for reducing emissions, managing waste efficiently, and optimizing construction processes through technologies like BIM and VDC. Despite globalstandards like LEED and BREEAM promotingtheir adoption, significantchallengesremainin adapting these materialsto resource-limited contexts.Further researchis requiredto assess their long-termenvironmental and economic viability, includingdetailedcostcomparisonswithconventionalmaterialsacrossdiverseprojects.Thefindingsdemonstrate that sustainable construction materials effectively mitigate environmental impacts, enhance energy efficiency, and support innovative construction practices. However, unresolved issues, such as local adaptation and comprehensive long- term evaluations, persist. To maximize their potential, it is essential to foster innovation, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and improve accessibility to these materials. These measures will ensure wider adoption, maximize environmental benefits, and support their application in diverse regional and economic contexts. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2025.
