Sustainability in Space Missions: Innovation in Radiation Protection Using Recycled Water

Aquino R.C.D.; Vargas K.E.C.; Llanos A.C.P.; Roman-Gonzalez A. · Proceedings of the International Astronautical Congress, IAC (2024) · DOI: 10.52202/078355-0111

Resumen

The demand for practical and innovative solutions to enhance astronaut radiation protection is crucial, especially in environments with prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation, such as lunar orbit. This study proposes improvements to the design of a water-based radiation shielding suit, leveraging water's known radiation attenuation properties and its recyclability aboard the Lunar Gateway. The research focuses on evaluating existing designs and suggests enhancements through radiation physics simulations and experimental testing. Key aspects include optimizing the suit's ergonomic design and exploring variations in thickness and water composition, such as the addition of non-polluting compounds to maximize shielding efficiency. While the PERSEO suit developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) serves as the foundation, this study emphasizes the need for incorporating head and eye protection to ensure comprehensive safety for astronauts. The proposed improvements aim to increase the suit's effectiveness and sustainability, offering a feasible solution for astronaut safety during long-duration missions in high-radiation environments like lunar orbit and, potentially, future Mars expeditions.
