Resumen
This paper examines how the Semiotic Inspection Method (SIM) is currently applied, which challenges evaluators face, and what kinds of tool support and improvement opportunities have been reported. Grounded in a systematic literature review, it addresses four research questions on: common difficulties in applying SIM manually, existing processes and variants for carrying out the method, the tools that support its application, and the advantages, disadvantages, and improvement opportunities observed in projects. Across the studies, we found recurring challenges such as the high cognitive effort required from evaluators, difficulties in consolidating findings across different evaluators, and the lack of automated support for documenting and organizing results. These findings point to concrete opportunities to design software tools that standardize SIM procedures, better support collaborative work, and partially automate report generation. The review maps the current landscape of SIM support tools and offers practical guidance for researchers and practitioners interested in developing web-based platforms that modernize SIM’s infrastructure while preserving its conceptual rigor and reducing evaluators’ workload. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
