“Sucre ad Portas”: Royalism and patriotism during the Colombian invasion of the city of Arequipa, 1823

Condori V. · Anuario de Estudios Americanos (2024) · DOI: 10.3989/aeamer.2024.1.09

Resumen

Beginning in 1820, the independence process in Peru, which began a decade ago, entered a new phase characterized by the arrival of foreign armies, the constitution of the first independent governments, and the sending of military expeditions to regions controlled by royalist forces. In this context, the city of Arequipa, “the very noble and very loyal”, would be occupied by an army from Gran Colombia and for almost 40 days. Time in which the local authorities and the population had to face all the vicissitudes of a taken city, which in the end would end up defining their political position in the face of the war and the new homeland.
