Resumen

This study analyzed how the artificial dam of the El Rejo River in Cajamarca, Peru, has affected nearby high Andean ecosystems and sought to propose strategies to conserve their biodiversity. During fieldwork, 500-meter linear transects and 100-m2 plots were established throughout the study area, collecting flora and fauna species by visualizing the populations with binoculars. For species identification, plant specimens were collected and specialized taxonomic keys were applied. Thirteen satellite images from the period 2005–2025 were analyzed to understand changes in the water surface. Eleven plant species were recorded, highlighting Polylepis racemosa (Critically Endangered) and Polylepis weberbaueri (Vulnerable), and six fauna species, including the monarch butterfly (Endangered) and birds classified as low risk. The results showed that the water surface has undergone extreme changes, with expansions from 8.98 hectares to 2.21 hectares, affecting plant regeneration and ecological stability. Based on these findings, an ecological plan is proposed that includes cooperation with the mining company, the creation of Polylepis species nurseries, an educational tourist circuit, and interpretive signage. The ecological proposal seeks to restore habitats, educate the community, and promote sustainable water management. This study underscores the importance of protecting high Andean ecosystems, restoring biodiversity, and raising environmental awareness in the region. © LEIRD 2025.All rights reserved.
