Structural integrity analysis through numerical simulations of a vessel made with natural sandwich type material

Sagástegui D.O.; Terán A.A. · Proceedings in Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (2022) · DOI: 10.1201/9781003320272-23

Resumen

At present, composite materials present great versatility in various industrial applications, increasing the interest of their research and innovation, due to the incredible mechanical and thermal properties that can be obtained. In the market the most common are those made with synthetic materials; however, there are other alternative composite materials that are little explored, for example, ichu fiber (Stipa Ichu), which comes from the indigenous plant called Ichu, this material has excellent mechanical and thermal properties. The present research proposes to introduce typical naval structures made up of natural sandwich-type materials, which will be evaluated by means of numerical simulations. This material is composed of layers of ichu fiber and an agglomerated cork core. In the case of naval structures evaluated numerically, the bottom, side and deck areas will be considered, which contain the sandwich type material and are subjected to a compression and bending load. Furthermore, the simulations consider the direction and quantity of lamination layers in the mentioned structures. From this paper, the results of the deformation field, the stresses supported by the study structures, and the results obtained by varying the angle of the fibers in the laminate layers of the sandwich structure are presented.
