Resumen
Adobe constructions in Peru represent a great risk against a seismic event because these structures can easily collapse. Besides, the danger increases because these buildings are usually handmade and constructed with no seismic design standards. Although several investigations have been conducted on adobe masonry buildings and their in-plane seismic behavior, they are usually built with thick walls, which are the most used in these structures; however, not enough research has been conducted on adobe thin-walled dwellings. This paper presents the results of axial compression tests on three prism and diagonal compression in three raw adobe masonry wallets, which were built with 0.11 × 0.20 × 0.09 m handmade bricks. These bricks are manufactured and commercialized locally in Huarangal settlement, Carabayllo district. Indeed, a structural analysis of a typical adobe house in the area built with this adobe masonry was performed to evaluate its seismic behavior according to Peruvian standards. The main results showed that the adobe bricks used in Huarangal houses have a low shear capacity compared to their compression strength. In conclusion, the results showed the need of apply a reinforcement technique to improve the walls shear capacity of these dwellings.
