Software Design with Facial Recognition for the Optimization of People Search in Surveillance Cameras at a Peruvian University

Marrujo-Ingunza C.; Velasquez-Jimenez L.; Romero-Untiveros L. · International Journal on Advanced Science, Engineering and Information Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18517/ijaseit.15.6.21010

Resumen

This study proposes the design and validation of facial recognition software aimed at optimizing the management of surveillance cameras in university settings. The objective was to improve institutional security by enabling efficient, real-time person searches. To address this problem, the Design Thinking methodology was used, structured in five phases: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This methodology identified key issues in conventional video surveillance systems, including limited automation, high levels of manual monitoring, and poor integration with visual analysis tools. Therefore, a functional prototype was developed that incorporates user-centered design elements, including intuitive navigation, visual differentiation of recognized and unknown individuals, and data filtering and export tools. The prototype was validated with the participation of 7 experts, who evaluated criteria related to design, satisfaction, and optimization, resulting in an average acceptance rate of 88%. In addition, Atlas.ti software was used to conduct a qualitative analysis of the user experience, revealing positive perceptions of feature clarity and operational efficiency. The results showed a high rating for the interface's visual accessibility and clarity in locating people. Overall, this study has significant practical implications by incorporating advanced technologies that optimize operational processes, reduce manual errors, and improve the real-time identification and location of people within educational settings. © (2025), (International Journal on Advanced Science).
