Resumen
This article explores the conceptualization of soft power within the context of sport mega-events. Given the conceptual ambiguity found in the literature surrounding soft power and sports, the article proposes a clearer definition that facilitates a more effective study of soft power and sport mega-events. The analysis draws on a critical review of the contributions from Joseph Nye and other scholars, identifying three key components of soft power: status, influence, and strategy. These components are applied to the organization of mega-events, highlighting how the absence of a strategic component in many previous studies has led to confusion with other symbolic actions, such as tourism promotion and nation branding. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of incorporating the strategic component to effectively distinguish soft power from other non-coercive actions in the realm of mega-events. Through this conceptual refinement, we aim to establish a solid foundation for future research on the political implications of mega-events and to develop a more comprehensive research agenda that enables a deeper understanding of the dynamics involved in their projection and the shaping of international power.
