Resumen
Social development and social movements The topic of social development is continuously gaining momentum in Colombia. What factors contribute to its rise in popularity? We believe that it may be explained by the fact that Colombian leaders are beginning to understand that the country’s population includes a large sector of marginalized people whose basic needs have to be addressed. That is why, at present, social development is sought as a proposal that consolidates such objectives as placing Colombian society in the international economic and political context and generating democratic and participatory processes at the community level. Hence, true economic development in Latin America can only be achieved with the creation of participatory spaces aimed at strengthening national democracy, creating employment opportunities, and satisfying basic needs. This vision must take into account social development as a means of continuously providing opportunities to all sectors according to their needs, consequently giving voice to the social movements active in various territories that are calling for large-scale social reforms in search of sustainability.
